Lucy Gilliam Sitton

Lucy Gilliam SittonLucy was born on April 27, 1918 during the depression and died May 6, 2011.

She attended Georgia State College in Milledgeville, Georgia and her father’s death was the key to her staying in Henderson County and, at her mother’s urging, she began teaching at Fruitland Baptist Institute in Edneyville.

As a longtime resident of Henderson County, she taught at Edneyville and Etowah Schools for 30 years, and then managed the bookstore at Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute for several years. From 1958 - 1991 she served as clerk for the church, taught Sunday School, and did missionary work with Hispanics and African Americans. This work included teaching English as a second language.

A member of Alpha Lambda Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for over 50 years, one of her proudest memories was of escorting Dr. Cordelia Camp, an Eta State Founder, at a state convention.

Whether she served on a committee, held an office, or participated as a loyal member, she willingly contributed. Until she became feeble and could no longer drive, she remained active in Alpha Lambda.

Beloved by her family, her students, and her Delta Kappa Gamma sisters, she enriched the lives of all she touched.
