Candy Priest

Candy PriestOur dear sister, Candy, peacefully left us on July 29,2011. Who of us will ever forget that radiant smile and zest for life.

In spite of continuing bouts with serious circulation problems, her spirit never flagged. Just this spring, she was busy on yet another project — planting apple trees. Many of us experienced what the author of her obituary wrote: “She touched many around her with grace throughout her vibrant, full life.”

Candy graduated from Hendersonville High School in 1968, and, subsequently, attended Mitchell Junior College, Western Carolina University and Exeter University, England. She held a BA degree in elementary education, middle grades language arts, severely emotionally handicapped children and learning disabled children. She held a masters degree in 4-6 instruction, 6-9 math, mentally handicapped children and program director advanced.

Spending 29 years in public education, Candy taught at Rugby Junior High, Hendersonville High, and Hendersonville Middle, and served in administration as director of elementary schools and special education for Hendersonville City Schools and director of student support services for Henderson County Public Schools.

A number of honors came Candy‟s way, some of which were; 1975 Young Careerist of Henderson County, Teacher of the Year for Hendersonville High School in 1980-1981, recipient of a Rotary International Scholarship, member of Kappa Kappa Iota, Delta Kappa Gamma and Phi Delta Kappa, and NC Executive Board of the Council of Administrators of Special Education.

Very much the volunteer, some of the places Candy served were Henderson County Special Olympics, Partnership for Health, NC Council of Administrators of Special Education, Community Child Protection Team, Mental Health for Children Task Force, Pardee Hospital Auxiliary and Land o‟ Sky Garden Club.

Candy is survived by two sisters and two brothers and their families.

We were proud to call Candy an Alpha Lambda sister. She will continue to live on in our hearts.
